Four Women Academics Win Awards

Edith Mitchell, clinical professor of medicine and medical oncology at Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, has been selected to receive the Humanitarian Award from the American Society of Clinical Oncology. The award is given to a member of the society for distinguished service through voluntary and non-compensated humanitarian endeavors. She will receive the award at the society’s annual meeting in June.

Dr. Mitchell is a graduate of Tennessee State University in Nashville. She received her medical degree at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond and completed her internship and residency at Meharry Medical College in Nashville. Her research is focused on pancreatic cancer and other gastrointestinal malignancies.

Meredith A. Hawkins, professor of medicine and director of the Global Diabetes Initiative at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine at Yeshiva University in the Bronx, New York, was selected to receive the Outstanding Investigator Award from the American Federation for Medical Research. She will receive the award later this month in Washington, D.C.

Dr. Hawkins earned a master’s degree at Yeshiva University and received her medical training at the University of Toronto.

Cynthia Feliciano, associate professor of sociology and Chicano/Latino studies at the University of California at Irvine, was named the Outstanding Latino/a Faculty in Higher Education at a Research Institution by the American Association of Hispanics in Higher Education.

Dr. Feliciano has been on the University of California Irvine faculty since 2004. She is magna cum laude graduate of Boston University and holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in sociology from the University of California at Los Angeles.

Kim Obbink, director of the Extended University at Montana State University, received the Friend of Great Plains IDEA award from the Great Plains Interactive Distance Education Alliance. The award is given to individuals who have worked to strengthen the alliance or to have developed or improved programs offered by the organization.
