Four Women Scholars Who Are Leaving Their University Posts

Patricia M. Lampkin, vice president and chief student affairs officer at the University of Virginia, has announced that she will retire at the end of the academic year or when her successor is hired. Dr. Lampkin has served as vice president for the past 18 years and has been on the staff at the university for 40 years.

An Illinois native, Lampkin arrived at the University of Virginia in 1979 and earned her doctorate in education in 1986. The following year she was named associate dean of students for residence life.

Karen P. DePauw, vice president and dean for graduate education at Virginia Tech, plans to retire in mid-August after an 18-year career at the university. Dr. DePauw is also a tenured professor in the department of sociology and human nutrition, foods, and exercise. Prior to joining Virginia Tech, Professor DePauw served for 22 years on the faculty at Washington State University and held several administrative positions, including dean of the graduate school.

Dr. DePauw earned a bachelor’s degree at Whittier College in California. She holds a master’s degree from California State University, Long Beach, and a Ph.D. from Texas Woman’s University.

Endia Beal, the director of the Diggs Gallery and an assistant professor of art at Winston-Salem State University in North Carolina, has stepped down. She will concentrate on her photography and public speaking career.

Beal is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she double majored in art history and studio art. She holds a master of fine arts degree from the School of Art at Yale University.

Jeanne H. Balsam, secretary of the faculty at the Georgia Institute of Technology and principal research associate at the Georgia Tech Research Institute, has announced her intention to retire. Balsam has served in the role of secretary of the faculty since 2015. Prior to her appointment, she was chair of the Georgia Tech Statutes Committee responsible for the administration of the Faculty Handbook.

Balsam holds bachelor’s and master’s degree in computer science from Georgia Tech.
