Women Are Earning a Declining Share of Degrees in STEM Fields at Community Colleges

A new report from the Institute for Women’s Policy Research shows that the percentage of women pursuing degrees in the so-called STEM fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics at community colleges has declined over the past decade. The report presents evidence that in 1997 women accounted for 33.8 percent of degrees earned in STEM fields at community colleges. But by 2007, women were earning only 27.5 percent of STEM degrees at two-year colleges.

The report outlines recommendations for improving access to STEM programs for women, particularly low-income women attending community colleges, and provides snapshots of some of the most promising programs from across the country that target women.
