Here is this week’s news of grants and gifts that may be of particular interest to women in higher education.
Agnes Scott College, a liberal arts institution for women on Decatur, Georgia, received a $2,715,000 grant from the Goizueta Foundation of Atlanta for the college’s Positioning Students for Success through Discovery, Exploration and Connection program. The funds will be used for summer research programs, career coaching, and professional development. The grant will also support the college’s Sophomore Class Atlanta Leadership Experience.
Spelman College, the liberal arts educational institution for women in Atlanta, received a $2 million donation from Leonard Riggio, founder and former chairman of Barnes & Noble, and his wife Louise. The funds will be used to help fund the construction of the Center for Innovation & the Arts on the Spelman campus. The Center will be home to a community of innovators, collaborators, artists, filmmakers, dancers, musicians, curators, art historians, and scientists.
A $5 million gift from an anonymous donor will enable Sweet Briar College to significantly expand its prestigious Presidential Scholars Program. Sweet Briar College is a liberal arts educational institution for women in Virginia. Presidential Scholarships offer full and partial tuition scholarships to Sweet Briar’s top student candidates based on quantifiable academic achievements and a rigorous on-campus, invitation-only interview process. The average high school grade point average of the college’s Presidential Scholars is 3.96. Currently, the college offers scholarships to 30 students; the gift allows the college to expand the number of participants.
