Two Women Scholars Honored by the Anita Borg Institute for Women and Technology

The Anita Borg Institute for Women and Technology in Palo Alto, California, has announced three winners of its Anita Borg Women of Vision Awards. Two of the three women hold positions in academia. The awards will be presented on May 10 in Santa Clara, California.

Sarita V. Adve, professor of computer science at the University of Illinois, is the winner of the Anita Borg Women of Vision Award for Innovation. She is being honored for her work in hardware and software memory models.

Dr. Adve is a graduate of the Indian Institute of Technology in Mumbai. She received a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Wisconsin – Madison. Before joining the faculty at the University of Illinois, she taught at Rice University from 1993 to 1999.

S. Revi Sterling received the Vision Award for Social Impact. She is being honored for the development of new networking technologies that benefit women, including a participatory community radio technology that allows women to create content when they are away from the broadcasting facility.

Dr. Sterling is director of the Information and Communication Technologies for Development Graduate Studies program at the ATLAS Institute of the University of Colorado in Boulder, where she received her Ph.D.

Anita Borg earned a Ph.D. in computer science at New York University and went on to work for Digital Equipment, Xerox and other high-tech firms. She was an advocate for increasing opportunities for women in technology fields. She died in 2003 at the age of 54 after suffering from a brain tumor.
