Report Shows Large Gender Pay Gap Among University of Virginia Faculty

According to a new report by editors at The Cavalier Daily, the student newspaper at the University of Virginia, there is a large gender gap in faculty member salaries at the university.

The report, which is based on data from a Freedom of Information Act request, showed that women faculty earned an average of $33,939 less than male faculty in 2018-2019. This gender gap existed among the ranks of lecturer, assistant professor, associate professor, and professor. The rank of instructor was the only position where women, on average, earned more than men. Additionally, out of the top 20 highest earning faculty members at the university, only six are women.

One of the most jarring disparities in the university’s gender pay gap is between current president Jim Ryan and former president Teresa Sullivan. Sullivan’s base salary was $560,000 compared to Ryan’s base salary of $750,000.
