Bowdoin College, the highly ranked liberal arts college in Brunswick, Maine, has announced the promotion of two faculty members to the rank of associate professor. Both of the faculty members who were promoted are women. They were both granted tenure.
Tess Chakkalakal holds a joint appointment in Africana studies and English. She is a scholar of nineteenth-century African American literature and an expert on the writing of Harriet Beecher Stowe. Dr. Chakkalakal, who joined the Bowdoin faculty in 2008, is the author of Novel Bondage: Slavery, Marriage, and Freedom in Nineteenth-Century America (University of Illinois Press, 2011).
Professor Chakkalakal holds bachelor’s, master’s, and Ph.D degrees, all from York University in Toronto.
Belinda Kong is a scholar of Chinese diaspora fiction and Asian American literature. She holds a joint appointment in Asian studies and English. She is the author of Tiananmen Fictions Outside the Square: The Chinese Literary Diaspora and the Politics of Global Culture, which is forthcoming from Temple University Press.
Dr. Kong is a graduate of the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in English language and literature from the University of Michigan.
