In Memoriam: Arlene Kaplan Daniels (1930-2012)

Arlene K. Daniels, professor emerita of sociology at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, died of heart failure late last month at her home in Berkeley, California. She was 81 years old.

Dr. Daniels held a bachelor’s degree, a master’s degree, and a Ph.D. in sociology, all from the University of California at Berkeley. After teaching at San Francisco State College, Professor Daniels joined the faculty at Northwestern in 1975 and was named director of the university’s new Program on Women. She later founded the women’s studies program and established the Women’s Center on campus. Professor Daniels served as secretary of the American Sociological Association, president of Sociologists for Women in Society, and as editor of The Journal of the Society for the Study of Social Problems.

Professor Daniels retired from teaching in 1995. Northwestern University has established the Arlene Kaplan Daniels Fund that will provide a scholarship for a graduate student working in the field of gender studies.
