Susan Elrod has been named chancellor of the Indiana University South Bend campus. She will assume her new duties on July 1, 2019.
The university enrolls nearly 5,000 undergraduate students and more than 500 graduate students. Women make up 62 percent of the undergraduate student body.
Currently, Dr. Elrod serves as the provost and executive vice chancellor for academic affairs at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. During her tenure, she has launched various enrollment management and student success initiatives geared towards increasing student recruitment, engagement, retention, and graduation. She also expanded the university’s access mission to a broader population of students and adult learners and has continuously advocated for faculty and staff development, community partnerships, and sustainability efforts.
Dr. Elrod’s previous experience in higher education includes serving as interim provost at California State University, dean of science and mathematics at Fresno State University, director of the Center for Excellence in Science and Mathematics Education at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, and director of Project Kaleidoscope at the Association of American Colleges and Universities.

Dr. Elrod is a graduate of California State University, Chico where she majored in biological science. She holds a Ph.D. in genetics from the University of California, Davis.
