Examining the Gender Gap in Engineering Degrees by Racial/Ethnic Group

A new report from the Association of Public Land-grant Universities offers a wealth of date on degree attainments in engineering disciplines.

The report offers information on engineering degrees earned by women by racial and ethnic group. For Whites, women earned 56.3 percent of all bachelor’s degrees awarded in all disciplines. But women earned only 19.4 percent of all bachelor’s degrees awarded to Whites in engineering. For Whites, women earned 61.5 percent of all master‘s degrees but only 21.4 percent of all master’s degrees in engineering.

For African Americans, women earned 64.1 percent of all bachelor’s degrees awarded in all disciplines. But women earned only 24.9 percent of all bachelor’s degrees awarded to Blacks in engineering. For African Americans women earned 69.6 percent of all master‘s degrees but only 28.2 percent of all master’s degrees in engineering.

For Hispanic Americans, women earned 60.5 percent of all bachelor’s degrees awarded in all disciplines. But women earned 21.7 percent of all bachelor’s degrees awarded to Hispanics in engineering. For Hispanics, women earned 63.9 percent of all master‘s degrees but only 26.3 percent of all master’s degrees in engineering.
