Here is this week’s news of grants and gifts that may be of particular interest to women in higher education.
Washington University in St. Louis received a five-year, $3.3 million grant from the National Institutes of Health for research on ways to prevent weight gain in young mothers ages 18 to 35. The research will be under the direction of Rachel Tabak, a research associate professor at the Brown School of social work at the university. Dr. Tabak is a graduate of Tufts University in Massachusetts, where she majored in biology. She holds a Ph.D. in nutrition from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
The University of Idaho received a $300,000 grant from the Department of Justice’s Office on Violence Against Women to address gender-based violence. Through the grant, the University of Idaho Coordinated Community Response Team is providing training to improve the response to gender-based violence on campus. This program includes implicit bias training for local police and security, a faulty training on how to respond to students victimized by interpersonal violence, and an on-campus Forensic Experiential Trauma Interview Certificate program for campus and community members to learn interview skills when talking to students who have experienced trauma.
