Florida International University Study Documents Barriers for Women in the Communications Industry

A new report from the Lillian Lodge Kopenhaver Center for the Advancement of Women in Communication at Florida International University in Miami, concludes that “women earn less, experience negative company cultures, and still face a glass ceiling in the communications industries.”

The report was authored by Dr. Kopenhaver, director of the center and former dean of the School of Journalism Mass Communications at Florida International University and research associate Lillian Anne Abreu. The authors conducted a survey that found:

* Women earn lower salaries than men.
* Women are more likely to spend fewer years in the communications professions than men and lack longevity in their current positions.
* More women are middle managers and in junior level positions, while men dominate top management positions.

* The culture of the company often prevents women from being promoted in favor of men.

Dr. Kopenhaver has worked at Florida International University since 1973. She is a graduate of Rowan University in New Jersey, where she majored in English and journalism. Dr. Kopenhaver earned a master’s degree at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a doctorate at Nova Southeastern University.
