The First Woman to Receive the $100,000 William Benter Prize in Applied Mathematics

Ingrid Daubechies, the James B. Duke Professor of Mathematics and Electrical and Computer Engineering at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, has been awarded the William Benter Prize in Applied Mathematics from the Liu Bie Ju Centre for Mathematical Sciences at the City University of Hong Kong. She is the first woman to receive the award.

The William Benter Prize in Applied Mathematics is given out every two years. The prize recognizes outstanding mathematical contributions that have had a direct and fundamental impact on scientific, business, finance and engineering applications. It comes with a $100,000 award.

Before joining the faculty at Duke, Professor Daubechies taught at Princeton University from 1994 to 2011. There, she was the first woman full professor in the department of mathematics. Dr. Daubechies was also the first woman president of the International Mathematical Union. She holds a Ph.D. from Vrije Universiteit Brussel in Belgium.
