Ava Ordman, professor of trombone in the College of Music at Michigan State University, has been selected to receive the Neill Humfeld Award from the International Trombone Association at the group’s annual festival that will be held in Iowa City, Iowa, in July. She is being honored for her teaching.
Before joining the faculty at Michigan State University in 2002, Professor Ordman was the principal trombonist with the Grand Rapids Symphony for 24 years. Later, she worked as a psychotherapist and taught at Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan. Professor Ordman earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in trombone performance from the University of Michigan. She also holds a master’s degree in counseling psychology from Western Michigan University.
Kara D. Peterman, an assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, has been awarded the 2018 Norman Medal, the highest honor bestowed by the American Society of Civil Engineers. She was honored for her research on cold-formed steel structural systems.
Dr. Peterman is a graduate of Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania, where she majored in engineering. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in structural engineering from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.
Jayme Locke, an associate professor of surgery at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine received the Distinguished Investigator Award for Translation into Public Benefit and Policy from the Association for Clinical and Translational Science. Dr. Locke performed the first kidney transplant in the Deep South from a HIV-positive deceased donor.
Dr. Locke is a graduate of Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, where she majored in biology and chemistry. She earned her medical degree at East Carolina University and then completed her surgical training and earned a master of public health degree at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.
Dr. Kahanov became the twentieth president of Notre Dame de Namur University in California on July 1. She previously served as provost at Alvernia University in Pennsylvania, Stockton University in New Jersey, and SUNY Oneonta.
Most recently, Dr. Sanders served as vice president of experiential product management and interim vice president of product and technology at Western Governors University.
Dr. Allmendinger began her tenure as the sixth president of Delta College in Michigan on June 29. Prior to her new role, she spent three years as vice president of student affairs at Southeastern Community College in Iowa.
Susan Rogers was named president of Central Maine College, effective August 10. Hara D. Charlier is the new president of Berkshire Community College in Pittsfield, Massachusetts.
