New Assignments for Five Women Faculty Members in Academia

Roberta Klatzky, the Charles J. Queenan Jr. Professor of Psychology at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, was named a University Professor, the highest faculty position at the university.

Professor Klatzky holds a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from the University of Michigan and a Ph.D. in cognitive psychology from Stanford University. She is the author or editor of seven books.

Rachel Patzer, an associate professor in the department of surgery at the medical school at Emory University, will be the first director of the university’s Health Services Research Center. She holds a joint appointment as an associate professor of epidemiology at the university’s Rollins School of Public Health. Dr. Patzer joined the faculty at Emory in 2011.

Dr. Patzer holds a master of public health degree and a Ph.D. in epidemiology from Emory University.

Rita Dove, Commonwealth Professor of English at the University of Virginia, was named poetry editor at The New York Times. In this role, Professor Dove will select a poem from new or forthcoming collections that will be published in the New York Times Magazine each Sunday.

Professor Dove, who served as Poet Laureate of the United States from 1993 to 1995, won the Pulitzer Prize for poetry in 1987. Professor Dove is a summa cum laude graduate of the Miami University and holds a master of fine arts degree from the University of Iowa.

Lorraine Ware, professor of medicine and pathology, microbiology, and immunology at the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, was elected vice president of the American Society for Clinical Investigation. Her research is focused on pathogenesis and the resolution of acute respiratory distress syndrome.

Professor Ware is a graduate oc Claremont-McKenna College in California. She earned her medical degree at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.

Shanna Pearson-Merkowitz, associate professor of political science at the University of Rhode Island, was appointed director of the Social Science Institute for Research, Education, and Policy at the university. Dr. Pearson-Merkowitz joined the faculty at the University of Rhode Island in 2009.

Dr. Pearson-Merkowitz is a graduate of Hampshire College in Amherst, Massachusetts. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. from the University of Maryland, College Park.
