Eleven Women Faculty Members Who Have Been Assigned New Duties

Elizabeth Yoon Hwa Raleigh was promoted to associate professor of sociology and granted tenure at Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota. She joined the faculty in 2012 after teaching at Hunter College of the City University of New York System. Dr. Raleigh is the author of Selling Transracial Adoption: Families, Markets, and the Color Line (Temple University Press, 2017).

Dr. Raleigh is a graduate of Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, where she majored in American civilization. She earned a Ph.D. in sociology at the University of Pennsylvania.

Barbara Shinn-Cunningham, a professor of biomedical engineering at Boston University, will join the faculty at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh this fall to serve as director of the university’s new Neuroscience Institute. She has served on the faculty at Boston University since 1997.

Dr. Shinn-Cunningham is a graduate of Brown University. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in electrical and computer engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of technology.

Barbara Engelhardt Martin was promoted to associate professor of computer science at Princeton University in New Jersey. She joined the Princeton faculty in 2014 after serving as an assistant professor of biostatistics and bioinformatics at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina.

Dr. Englehardt Martin is a graduate of Stanford University in California and holds a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley.

Rana Ashkar was appointed an assistant professor of physics at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. Earlier, she was a Clifford G. Shull Fellow at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee.

Ashkar is a graduate of Lebanese University. She earned a master’s degree from American University in Beirut, and a Ph.D. in physics at Indiana University.

Nsoki Mavinga was promoted to associate professor of mathematics and statistics at Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania. She joined the faculty in 2013 after serving for two years as a visiting professor. Earlier, she taught at the University of Rochester.

Dr. Mavinga earned a Ph.D. in mathematics at the University of Alabama-Birmingham in 2008.

Heidi R. Lewis was promoted to associate professor of feminist and gender studies at Colorado College. She was also granted tenure. Dr. Lewis joined the faculty at the college in 2010. She is the associate editor of The Feminist Wire.

Dr. Lewis is a graduate of Robert Morris University in Moon, Pennsylvania. She earned a master’s degree in English literature at Ohio University and a Ph.D. in American studies at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana.

Carrie L. Kitko was appointed the Ingram Professor in Pediatric Oncology at Vanderbilt University.  She was the only woman among nine scholars recently awarded an endowed chair. Dr. Kitko joined the faculty at Vanderbilt in 2015 after teaching at the University of Michigan.

Professor Kitko is a graduate of Denison University in Granville, Ohio. She earned her medical degree at Ohio State University.

Quincy D. Newell was promoted to associate professor of religious studies at Hamilton College in Clinton, New York. She was also granted tenure. She taught at the University of Wyoming for 11 years before joining the faculty at Hamilton College in 2015. Dr. Newell is the author of Constructing Lives at Mission San Francisco: Native Californians and Hispanic Colonists, 1776- 1821 (University of New Mexico Press, 2009).

Dr. Newall is a graduate of Amherst College in Massachusetts. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Gayle Zydlewski, an associate professor of marine science and graduate coordinator of the Marine Biology Program at the University of Maine, was named director of the Maine Sea Grant College Program, effective July 1.

Dr. Zydlewski is a summa cum laude graduate of what is now the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth. She holds a master’s degree from the University of Rhode Island and a Ph.D. from the University of Maine.

Carrie Baker was promoted to full professor of women and gender studies at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts. She is the author of The Women’s Movement Against Sexual Harassment (Cambridge University Press, 2007).

Dr. Baker is graduate of Yale University, where she majored in philosophy. She holds a master’s degree, a law degree, and a Ph.D. in women’s studies from Emory University in Atlanta.

Mary Ann Moran, a Distinguished Research Professor in the department of marine sciences at the University of Georgia, was named a Regents Professor at the university. Professor Moran joined the faculty at the University of Georgia in 1993. Her research focuses on bacteria in marine ecosystems.

Dr. Moran is a graduate of Colgate University in Hamilton, New York. She earned a master’s degree at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, and a Ph.D. at the University of Georgia.
