The board of trustees of the California State University System has named Adela de la Torre as the next president of San Diego State University. When she takes office in June, Dr. De la Torre will become the first woman to serve as president of the university.
According to the latest data from the U.S. Department of Education, San Diego State University enrolls nearly 30,000 undergraduate students and more than 4,800 graduate students. Women make up 54 percent of the undergraduate student body.
In accepting her new post. Dr. De la Torre said that the university “boasts a robust and dynamic variety of academic offerings taught by world-class faculty as well as a commitment to serve a brilliant and diverse population of students. It is an incredibly prestigious university and a wonderful point of pride for San Diego.”
Currently, Dr. De la Torre serves as vice chancellor for student affairs and campus diversity at the University of California, Davis. At the university, she has also served as director of the Center for Transnational Health, special assistant to the dean of humanities, arts, and cultural sciences, and chair of the Chicana/o studies department. Earlier in her career, Dr. De la Torre was director of the Mexican American Studies and Research Center at the University of Arizona.
Dr. De la Torre holds a bachelor’s degree, a master’s degree. and a Ph.D. in agricultural and resource economics, all from the University of California, Berkeley.
