University at Buffalo’s Cristanne Miller Honored for Her Work on Emily Dickinson

Cristanne MillerCristanne Miller, Edward H. Butler Professor of Literature in the English department at the University at Buffalo, has received the biennial Prize for a Scholarly Edition from the Modern Language Association. Professor Miller was honored for her book Emily Dickinson’s Poems: As She Preserved Them (Belknap Press, 2016).

In accepting the award, Professor Miller said that “increasingly, I have felt that the most useful thing I can do for the profession and for my own particular fields in the profession is to produce eminently readable, clear, critical editions. Editing Dickinson’s poems is a particularly contentious area within the world of textual editions. It is therefore extremely gratifying to have my edition of Dickinson’s poems considered a ‘masterpiece of scholarly production.’”

Professor Miller has been on the faculty at the University at Buffalo since 2006. She previously taught at Pomona College in California.

Dr. Miller holds bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees from the University of Chicago. She is the author of four other books including, Emily Dickinson: A Poet’s Grammar (Harvard University Press, 1987) and Reading in Time: Dickinson and the Nineteenth Century (University of Massachusetts Press, 2012).
