New Roles for Six Women Faculty Members at Colleges and Universities

Lynn Rainville, research professor in the humanities and director of the Tusculum Institute at Sweet Briar College in Virginia, is taking on the added duties of associate dean for academic affairs. She joined the faculty in 2008 after serving for seven years as a visiting professor. She is the author of several books including Hidden History: African American Cemeteries in Central Virginia (University of Virginia Press, 2014).

Dr. Rainville is a graduate of Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire, where she majored in history and anthropology. She holds a Ph.D. in anthropology and archaeology from the University of Michigan.

Alison Hawthorne Deming was named Regent Professor at the University of Arizona. She is a professor of English and is an affiliate faculty member of the Institute of the Environment at the university. A poet and essayist, Professor Deming has authored several volumes of poetry and four works of nonfiction including Zoologies: On Animals and the Human Spirit (Milkweed Editions, 2014).

Professor Deming received a master of fine arts degree from Vermont College and a Wallace Stegner Fellowship from Stanford University.

Bertie Greer, an associate professor of global supply chain management at Wayne State University in Detroit, was given the added duties of associate dean for strategy and planning. She joined the faculty at Wayne State University in 2016 after teaching for 15 years at Northern Kentucky University.

Dr. Greer earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and an MBA from the University of Toledo in Ohio. She holds a Ph.D. in business administration from Kent State University in Ohio.

Phoebe A. Cohen was promoted to associate professor of geosciences at Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts. She was also granted tenure. Dr. Cohen is a paleontologist who focuses on earth history before the evolution of animals.

Dr. Cohen is a graduate of Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, where she majored in earth systems science. She holds a Ph.D. in earth and planetary sciences from Harvard University.

Erin B. Corcoran was appointed executive director of the Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies at the University of Notre Dame. She was a professor and director of the Social Justice Institute at the University of New Hampshire School of Law.

Professor Corcoran is a graduate of Montana State University, where she majored in philosophy and religious studies. She earned a juris doctorate at the Georgetown University Law Center.

Pampee Young, a professor of pathology, microbiology, and immunology at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center, has been named chief medical officer of the American Red Cross. A member of the Vanderbilt faculty since 2003, Dr. Young has served as director of Transfusion Medicine. She will continue to teach at Vanderbilt as an adjunct professor.

Dr. Young is a graduate of Rice University in Houston, Texas, where she majored in biochemistry. She earned a medical doctorate and a Ph.D. at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.
