Three Women Faculty Members Taking on New Roles

Leila Mansouri is a new assistant professor of English at Scripps College in Claremont, California. Her scholarship focuses on the intersection of literature and electoral politics in the early United States.

Dr. Mansouri holds a master of fine arts degree in fiction from the University of California, Irvine. She earned a Ph.D. in American literature from the University of California, Berkeley.

Angela K. Lewis, professor of political science at the University of Alabama Birmingham, has been selected to serve as interim chair of the department of political science and public administration at the university. Dr. Lewis joined the faculty at the University of Alabama Birmingham in 2003. Dr. Lewis is the author of Conservatism in the Black Community: To the Right and Misunderstood (Routledge, 2012).

A native of Birmingham, professor Lewis is a graduate of the University of Alabama, where she majored in political science with a concentration in regional and urban planning. She holds a master of public administration degree and a Ph.D. in political science/urban and regional planning from the University of Tennessee.

M. Sue Kirkman, professor of medicine and medical director of the clinical trials unit of the Diabetes Care Center at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, was appointed chair of the National Diabetes Education Program. The NDEP is co-sponsored by the National Institutes of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Prior to joining the faculty at the University of North Carolina in January 2013, Dr. Kirkman was senior vice president for medical affairs at the American Diabetes Association.

Professor Kirkman holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in biology from Tufts University in Massachusetts. She earned her medical degree at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
