Brown University’s Jill Pipher Elected as the Next President of the American Mathematical Society

Jill Pipher, the Elisha Benjamin Andrews Professor of Mathematics and vice president for research at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, has been elected as the next president of the American Mathematical Society. The organization has 28,000 members worldwide and is dedicated to furthering mathematics research, scholarship, and education. The association was founded in 1888.

Professor Pipher will serve a two-year term as president of the American Mathematical Society beginning in 2019. She is a past president of the Association of Women in Mathematics.

A member of the Brown University faculty since 1989, Professor Pipher is the founding director of Brown’s Institute for Computational and Experimental Research in Mathematics. It is one of only eight mathematics institutes in the nation supported by the National Science Foundation.

Professor Pipher holds a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and a Ph.D. in mathematics with a concentration in harmonic analysis from the University of California,, Los Angeles.
