Here is this week’s news of grants and gifts that may be of particular interest to women in higher education.
The University of South Carolina received a $1 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to conduct research on natural supplements that can be used to treat pain resulting from breast cancer. The project is under the direction of Kandy Velazquez, a postdoctoral researcher at the university. Velazquez holds a bachelor’s degree in biology and a master’s degree in physiology from the University of Puerto Rico. She earned a Ph.D. in exercise science from the University of South Carolina.
The Center for Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at Florida Atlantic University received a $125,000 grant from the Feminist Scholarship Fund Inc. to support the center’s educational and research programs. The center houses an interdisciplinary program that offer’s a master’s degree.
Smith College, the highly rated liberal arts educational institution for women in Northampton, Massachusetts, received a $10 million donation from alumna Margaret Wurtele to establish the Wurtele Center for Leadership at the college. The center will offer courses, workshops, a speaker series, and a fellows program.
