Isabelle Clark-Decès, a professor of anthropology at Princeton University, died as a result of a fall late last month in the village of Mussoorie, India. Professor Clark-Decès was in India where she was teaching a six-week course for undergraduates under the auspices of the Princeton Institute for International and Regional Studies. The course was entitled “At Home (and Abroad) in the Indian Himalayas.”
Professor Clark-Decès joined the Princeton University faculty in 1996. Since 2007, she directed the Program in South Asian Studies. She was the author of several books including her latest work The ‘Right’ Spouse: Preferential Marriages in Tamil Nadu (Stanford University Press, 2014).
A native of Paris, France, Professor Clark-Decès held a bachelor’s degree and a Ph.D. in anthropology from the University of California, Berkeley.
