Seven Women Faculty Members Who Have Been Selected for New Roles or Assignments

Reighan A. Gillam was appointed an assistant professor of anthropology in the College of Letters, Arts, and Sciences at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. She has been serving as an assistant professor of Afro-American and African studies at the University of Michigan. She is currently working on a book manuscript with the title, Strategic Visionaries: Afro-Brazilian Media Producers and the Politics of Representation.

Dr. Gillam is a graduate of the University of Virginia, where she majored in anthropology and African American studies. She holds a Ph.D. in cultural anthropology from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York.

Kristy Martyn, a faculty member at the School of Nursing at Emory University in Atlanta, has been given the added duties of associate dean for graduate education. She joined the faculty at the nursing school in 2013 and has served as assistant dean for clinical advancement and director of the Doctor of Nursing Practice degree program.

Dr. Martyn is a graduate of Florida State University. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in nursing science from the University of Florida.

Joyce White Vance will be joining the faculty at the University of Alabama School of law this August as a Distinguished Visiting Lecturer in Law. In 2009, Vance was nominated by President Obama as the U.S. Attorney for the northern district of Alabama.

Vance is a graduates of Bates College in Lewiston, Maine, and the University of Virginia School of Law.

Kalyani Chadha was promoted to associate professor in the Philip Merrill College of Journalism at the University of Maryland at College Park. She has been employed by the university since 2000.

Dr. Chadha is a graduate of Delhi University in India, where she majored in history. She holds a master’s degree from Jawaharlal Nehru University in India and a Ph.D. in mass communication from the University of Maryland.

Jennie Noll, a professor of human development and family studies at Pennsylvania State University, will be the director of the new Center for Healthy Children at the university. The center is being financed by five-year, $7.7 million grant from the National Institutes of Health.

Professor Noll holds a bachelor’s degree and a Ph.D. in developmental psychology from the University of Southern California.

Sarah Deer was named a professor in the department of women, gender & sexuality studies and a professor of public affairs and administration at the University of Kansas. A 2014 winner of a “genius grant” from the MacArthur Foundation. Professor Deer has been serving on the faculty of the Hamline University School of Law in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Professor Deer is the author of The Beginning and End of Rape: Confronting Sexual Violence in Native America (University of Minnesota Press, 2015). She holds a bachelor’s degree in women’s studies and philosophy and a juris doctorate from the University of Kansas.

Jacqueline Rhodes, a professor of writing, rhetoric, and American culture at Michigan State University, has been given the added responsibilities of director of the new Consortium for Critical Diversity in a Digital Age Research. Professor Rhodes joined the faculty at Michigan State in 2016 after teaching at California State University, San Bernardino.

Professor Rhodes is a graduate of the University of Montana, where she majored in English. She holds a master’s degree from the University of Idaho and a Ph.D. in English from the University of Southern Mississippi.

Karen Davis O’Hara Named Director of Kenai Peninsula College in Alaska

Born and raised in Alaska, Dr. O'Hara previously spent more than two decades with the College of Education at California State University, Sacramento. More recently, she was executive director of Sierra College's Nevada County Campus.
