University of Rhode Island Scholar Debuts New Online Journal on Sex Trafficking

Donna M Hughes, who holds the Eleanor M. and Oscar M. Carlson Endowed Chair in Women’s Studies at the University of Rhode Island, is the founder and editor in chief of the new online journal Dignity. The nonprofit publication, supported by the library at the University of Rhode Island, deals with issues of sexual exploitation, violence, and slavery.

“Over the years I’ve learned that grassroots activists and service providers frequently have more knowledge and understanding about violence and exploitation — and their harmful influence on people — than the academics who often live and work at a distance from the community,’’ says Professor Hughes. “My goal is to create a journal where community activists and academics can share the same space and learn from each other.”

Since the journal went live, about 9,000 people from 109 countries around the world have downloaded articles from the journal’s website. All articles may be downloaded for free.

“I’m pleased so far with Dignity because it’s creating a place for scholars to publish their research and for professionals and advocates to describe their frontline work,” says Dr. Hughes. “The journal is already developing a global voice and reputation. I’m very pleased.”

Professor Hughes holds a bachelor’s degree in animal science and a Ph.D. in genetics from Pennsylvania State University.
