Grants or Gifts Relating to Women in Higher Education

Here is this week’s news of grants and gifts that may be of particular interest to women in higher education.

Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota, received a three-year, $228,792 grant from the Henry Luce Foundation for the college’s Clare Boothe Luce Undergraduate Research Awards program for women majoring in computer science. The grant will fund a 10-week, summer research program for eight women each year over the next three years.

The Winship Cancer Institute at Emory University in Atlanta received a $750,000 grant from the board of managers of the Avon Breast Cancer Crusade that will be used for breast cancer outreach education and to provide clinical access to women from underserved communities. The grant program will be under the direction of Sheryl Gabram-Mendola, surgeon-in-chief at Grady Memorial Hospital and leader of the Avon Comprehensive Breast Center. Professor Gabram-Mendola has served on the university’s faculty since 2005. She earned her medical degree at Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, D.C.

Ursuline College, the liberal arts edcuational institution for women in Pepper Pike, Ohio, received a grant from the Keybank Foundation to fund the college’s new Faculty Diversity Fellow program. The grant will fund the appointment of two fellows for two semester each. The fellows will teach courses and will be assigned a faculty mentor. The first Faculty Diversity Fellow is Kristie Williams, who recently received her Ph.D. in counselor education and supervision from the University of Akron.
