University of Maryland, Baltimore County Scholar Wins Best Book Award

Nancy Rankie SheltonNancy Rankie Shelton, a professor of education at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, received the 2016 Best Book Award in the Health: Death and Dying category from the i310 Media Group. With offices in Los Angeles and Phoenix, i310 Media is involved in both the publishing and entertainment industries. The Best Books Awards were established in 2003 and honor books published in dozens of categories. There were more than 2,000 entries for this year’s awards.

Professor Shelton was honored for her book 5-13: A Memoir of Love, Loss, and Survival (Garn Press, 2016). The book relates the story of the 35-year relationship Professor Shelton had with her husband Jack, how the couple waged a six-month battle against Jack’s lung cancer, and how she coped with losing her mate.

Professor Shelton is a graduate of the University at Albany of the State University of New York System. She earned a master’s degree in elementary education and a Ph.D. in curriculum and instruction, language, literacy, and culture from the University of Florida.
