Four Women Scholars Honored With Notable Awards

Molek-KarenKaren Molek, an assistant professor of chemistry at the University of West Florida in Pensacola, received the Zaida C. Morales-Martinez Prize for Mentoring from the American Chemical Society. She is the director of the Chemistry Scholars program at the University of West Florida which seeks to help students from underrepresented groups.

Dr. Molek is a graduate of Mercer University in Macon, Georgia. She holds a Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Georgia.

zavellaPatricia Zavella professor of Latin American and Latino studies at the University of California, Santa Cruz, has been selected to receive the Gender Equity in Anthropology Award from the American Anthropological Association. She will be honored for her efforts to advance the status of women in anthropology at the association’s annual meeting in Minneapolis this November.

Professor Zavella joined the faculty at the university in 1984. She is a graduate of Pitzer College in Claremont, California. Dr. Zavella holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley.

Oreskes-605Naomi Oreskes, professor of the history of science at Harvard University, will receive the Stephen H. Schneider Award for Outstanding Climate Science Communication from Climate One of the Commonwealth Club of California. The award honors a scholar who has made extraordinary scientific contributions and communicated that knowledge effectively to the public at large. Professor Oreskes will be honored in San Francisco this December.

Professor Oreskes is the co-author of Merchants of Doubt, How a Handful of Scientists Obscured the Truth on Issues from Tobacco to Global Warming (Bloomsbury, 2010). She is a graduate of Imperial College, London and holds a Ph.D. from Stanford University.

genshaft2Judy Genshaft, president of the University of South Florida System, received the 2016 Malone International Leadership Award from the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities. President Genshaft has led the university system since 2000.

Dr. Genshaft is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She holds master’s and doctoral degrees from Kent State University in Ohio.
