Victoria Manfredi was appointed an assistant professor of computer science at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut. She has been serving as research scientist for Raytheon BBN Technologies in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Dr. Manfredi is a magna cum laude graduate of Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts, where she majored in neuroscience. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.
Ann Pearson, the Murray and Martha Ross Professor of Environmental Science at Harvard University was named a Harvard College Professor. The designation will provide Dr. Pearson with additional funds for research, a semester of paid leave, or extra compensation for summer work. Dr. Pearson has been on the Harvard faculty since 2001 and was promoted to full professor in 2009.
Professor Pearson is a graduate of Oberlin College in Ohio, where she majored in chemistry. She earned a Ph.D. in marine chemistry and geochemistry through the joint program of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute.
Julia Thom-Levy, an associate professor of physics at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, was given the added duties of serving as the provost’s fellow for pedagogical innovation. She will serve in this new position for a three-year term.
Dr. Thom-Levy joined the faculty at Cornell in 2005. She holds a Ph.D. at the University of Hamburg in Germany.
Kelly Long, an associate professor of history and associate dean for undergraduate studies at Colorado State University, has been named vice provost for undergraduate affairs. She joined the faculty at Colorado State in 1998 after teaching at the high school level for 18 years.
Dr. Long holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Colorado State University and a Ph.D. from the University of Colorado at Boulder.
Mary Tackett will be a new assistant professor of education at Sweet Briar College in Virginia this coming fall. She recently completed her doctorate in education, curriculum and instruction at Virginia Tech, where she was voted the Graduate Student of the Year.
Dr. Tackett also holds a bachelor’s degree in English and a master’s degree in education from Virginia Tech.
Marlene Behrmann was named a University Professor at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. She has been serving as the George A. and Helen Cowan Professor of Cognitive Neuroscience at the university. Dr. Behrmann is the first woman faculty member at the university to be elected to the National Academy of Sciences.
Professor Behrmann holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa. She earned a Ph.D. in psychology at the University of Toronto.
Emily Greenwood was named chair of the department of classics at Yale University. She is a professor of classics and a professor of African American studies at the university. Professor Greenwood joined the faculty at Yale in 2009 after teaching at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland.
Dr. Greenwood holds a bachelor’s degree, a master’s degree, and a Ph.D. in classics, all from the University of Cambridge.
Michelle M. Grundy, an assistant professor of medical education and administration at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, has been given the additional duty as director of the Health Professions Advisory Office at the university. She joined the faculty at Vanderbilt in 2002.
Dr. Grundy holds a bachelor’s degree and a Ph.D. in microbiology and immunology from Vanderbilt University.
