Historian Katherine Fleming Named the Next Provost at New York University

Katherine FlemingKatherine Fleming was appointed provost at New York University, effective September 1. Dr. Fleming currently serves as deputy provost and vice chancellor for Europe at the university. She also serves as the Alexander S. Onassis Professor of Hellenic Culture and Civilization and as director of the Remarque Institute at the university.

FlemingBookProfessor Fleming specializes in the modern history of Greece, the Balkans, and the Mediterranean region. Her most recent book is Greece: A Jewish History (Princeton University Press, 2007).

In accepting to appointment as provost, Dr. Fleming said, “I’m honored to have been asked to work with President Hamilton, the deans, and the faculty in this role. I’m especially looking forward to collaborating with my colleagues across the university to advance our academic mission. This is an exciting but also challenging time to be at NYU. My hope is to help address the challenges and identify opportunities for growth.”

Dr. Fleming is a graduate of Barnard College in New York City, where she majored in comparative religion. She holds a master’s degree from the University of Chicago and a Ph.D. in history from the University of California, Berkeley.
