Emily Carter Named Dean of the School of Engineering and Applied Science at Princeton University

Emily CarterThe board of trustees of Princeton University in New Jersey announced the appointment of Emily A. Carter as the next dean of the School of Engineering and Applied Science. Her appointment is effective on July 1.

Dr. Carter has been on the faculty at Princeton since 2004 after teaching at the University of California, Los Angeles. She currently serves as the Gerhard R. Andlinger Professor in Energy and the Environment at Princeton. She is also a professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering and the founding director of the Andlinger Center for Energy and the Environment.

In accepting the appointment, Professor Carter said that “I am immensely grateful to my colleagues and the University administration for their faith in me to lead the already world-class School of Engineering and Applied Science to new heights. I am excited to foster new fields of research central to 21st-century society, to educate students of all backgrounds as to the wonderful creativity and societal impact associated with being an engineer, and to enhance the school’s partnerships across the campus and beyond.”

Professor Carter is member of the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. She is the author or co-author of more than 300 scientific articles.

Dr. Carter is a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, where she majored in chemistry. She holds a Ph.D. in chemistry from the California Institute of Technology.
