In Memoriam: Zaha Hadid, 1950-2016

Zaha Hadid, an educator and one of the world’s most notable architects, died on March 31 of a heart attack in a Miami hospital, where she was being treated for bronchitis. She was 65 years old.

A native of Bagdad, Iraq, Hadid studied at the American University of Beirut and the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London. She established an architectural practice London in 1979 and designed dozens of major buildings throughout the world. Hadid was the first woman to win the Pritzker Architecture Prize.

In addition to her practice, Hadid held the Kenzo Tange Chair at the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University and the Sullivan Chair in the School of Architecture at the University of Illinois. She also taught studio classes at Columbia University, Yale University, and the University of Applied Arts in Vienna, Austria.
