Grants or Gifts Relating to Women in Higher Education

Here is this week’s news of grants and gifts that may be of particular interest to women in higher education.
Portland State University in Oregon received a $750,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Justice to develop a sexual assault prevention manual that can be used by colleges and universities. Co-principal investigator on the grant project is Sarah McMahon, an assistant professor of social work and associate director of the Center on Violence Against Women and Children at Rutgers University in New Jersey. She is a magna cum laude graduate of the University of Notre Dame and hold master’s and doctoral degrees in social work from Rutgers University.
Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, received a grant from the George Family Foundation to create the Penny Pilgram George Women’s Leadership Initiative. The initiative will be housed in the Center for Leadership Development & Social Action at Duke and provide leadership training for women undergraduates at the university. Dr. George received her bachelor’s degree in English at Duke University. She holds a master’s degree in educational psychology from the University of Minnesota and a doctorate in counseling psychology from the University of St. Thomas in Saint Paul, Minnesota. Barnard College, the highly rated liberal arts educational institution for women in New York City received three donations totaling $70 million from the families of three alumnae. The money will be used to build a 128,000-square-foot teaching and learning center on the Barnard campus. More about the new center is available here.
