A Check-Up on Women in U.S. Medical Schools

The Association of American Medical Colleges reports that in 2011, 15,953 women applied for admission to U.S. medical schools. Women made up 48.9 percent of all medical school applicants.

Over the past decade the number of women applying to medical school increased by 29.1 percent. During the same period, male applicants to medical schools increased by 33 percent. In 2001, women were 49.6 percent of all medical school applicants.

In 2001, women made up 47.6 percent of all first-year enrollments in U.S. medical schools. This year women are 47.0 percent of all first-year medical students.
