Six Women Professors Presented With Notable Awards

GrantChristine Grant, professor of chemical engineering and associate dean for faculty advancement in the College of Engineering at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, has been selected to receive the 2015 Mentor Award from the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Dr. Grant will be honored at the AAAS annual meeting in Washington on February 12.

Professor Grant is a graduate of Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in chemical engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta.

shannon_vallor-Shannon Vallor, associate professor of philosophy at Santa Clara University in California, received the World Technology Award in Ethics. She was honored for her work in the integration of software ethics with industry and engineering/computer science education. Her module on software engineering ethics is used by more than 34 universities worldwide. Dr. Vallor is president of the international Society for Philosophy and Technology.

Dr. Vallor has been on the faculty at Santa Clara University since 2013. She holds a Ph.D. in philosophy from Boston College.

APPLEGATEKimberly E. Applegate, professor of radiology and pediatrics at the Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, received the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Award from the American Association of Women Radiologists. The award recognizes outstanding contributions to advancing women in the field of radiology.

Dr. Applegate is a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, where she majored in chemistry. She holds a master’s degree in epidemiology and biostatistics from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland and a medical doctorate from George Washington University in Washington, D.C.

BullardJulie Bullard, professor of early childhood education at the University of Montana, received the Teacher Educator Award from the National Association of Early Childhood Teacher Educators. Dr. Bullard is the author of Creating Environments for Children: Birth to Age Eight (Pearson, 2013).

Dr. Bullard holds bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees, all from Montana State University.

nance.wilsonNance Wilson, associate professor of literacy at the State University of New York at Cortland, received the Brenda S. Townsend Service Award from the American Reading Forum, recognizing her contributions to the organization.

Dr. Wilson has been on the faculty at SUNY-Cortland since 2014. Previously, she taught at Lourdes University in Sylvania, Ohio. She is a magna cum laude graduate of New York University. Dr. Wilson earned a master’s degree at the University of Central Florida and a Ph.D. at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Mary Kay Washington, professor of pathology, microbiology, and immunology at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, was the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from the College of American Pathologists. Dr. Washington has been on the faculty at Vanderbilt since 1996.

Dr. Washington is a graduate of Mississippi State University, where she majored in chemistry. She earned a medical degree and a Ph.D. in physical chemistry at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
