Emily Raboteau, a professor of English and creative writing at the City College of New York, has won the fourth International Flash Fiction Competition sponsored by the Cesar Egido Serrano Foundation and administered by the Museum of Words in Spain. Professor Raboteau’s winning entry, a 100-word short story entitled “Oysters,” was selected from more than 35,000 entries worldwide. She will be awarded the $20,000 first prize on November 23 in Madrid.
Emily Raboteau is also the author of the novel The Professor’s Daughter (Picador, 2006). Professor Raboteau also won an American Book Award for her work of creative nonfiction entitled, Searching for Zion: The Quest for Home in the African Diaspora (Atlantic Monthly Press, 2013).
Professor Raboteau is a graduate of Yale University and holds a master of fine arts degree from New York University. Her father is Albert Raboteau, a scholar of African American religion who is the Henry W. Putnam Professor of Religion Emeritus at Princeton University.
