
Dr. Freeman Hawks was active in the civil rights movement and traveled the South in efforts to register Black voters. She was the founder and director of RECAP (Regional Economic Community Action Program) in Middletown, New York, a grassroots effort in President Johnson’s war on poverty.
A native of Gloversville, New York, Dr. Freeman-Hawks was a graduate of the University at Buffalo. She held a Ph.D. in psychology from New York University and a doctorate in interpersonal communication from the University of Massachusetts.
