Martha Minow Selected to Receive the $25,000 Gittler Prize

Martha Minow, the Morgan and Helen Chu Dean and professor of law of Harvard Law School, was named the winner of the 2015-16 Joseph B. and Toby Gittler Prize from Brandeis University. The award is presented each year to an individual “whose body of published work reflects scholarly excellence and makes a lasting contribution to racial, ethnic, or religious relations.”

The Gittler Prize was established in 2007. Winners receive a medal and a $25,000 honorarium. Professor Minow will be honored at a ceremony on the Brandeis campus in February.

Lisa Lynch, interim president of Brandeis University, stated that “Martha Minow is not just a great scholar, but someone who knows how to apply her knowledge to make a difference in the world. Her work advocating for issues of social justice, civil rights, and education is vast, and her scholarship on these issues and the law is widely cited and impactful.”

Professor Minow is the author or editor of several books including Between Vengeance and Forgiveness: Facing History After Genocide and Mass Violence (Beacon Press, 1998) and In Brown’s Wake: Legacies of America’s Constitutional Landmark (Oxford University Press, 2010).

Professor Minow has taught at Harvard Law School since 1981. She is a graduate of the University of Michigan and Yale Law School. Professor Minow also holds a master’s degree in education from Harvard University.
