New Roles for 12 Women Faculty Members

gattaMary Gatta is a new associate professor of sociology at Guttman Community College in New York City. She was a senior scholar at Wider Opportunities for Women in Washington, D.C. Earlier, Dr. Gatta was a senior research scientist at the Center for Women and Work at Rutgers University in New Jersey. She is the author of All I Want Is a Job!: Unemployed Women Navigating the Public Workforce System (Stanford Economics and Finance, 2014).

Dr. Gatta is a graduate of Providence College in Rhode Island, where she majored in social science. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in sociology from Rutgers University.

JordannaMatlonJordanna Malton is a new assistant professor in the School of International Service at American University in Washington, D.C. She was a postdoctoral fellow at the Institute for Advanced Study in Toulouse, France.

Dr. Malton is a graduate of Columbia University, where she majored in urban studies. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in sociology from the University of California, Berkeley.

ganterSusan L. Ganter was named professor and director of the School of Education at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg. She will hold a joint appointment in the department of mathematics at the university. She was a professor of mathematics and mathematics education at East Carolina University.

Professor Ganter is a graduate of Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. from the University of California, Santa Barbara.

boshAmanda Bosh was promoted to senior lecturer in the department of Earth, atmospheric and planetary sciences at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She is an expert in planetary rings and the atmospheres of plants in the outer solar system. She has been a lecturer at MIT since 2009.

Dr. Bosh holds bachelor’s degrees in Earth, atmospheric and planetary sciences and materials science and engineering and a Ph.D. in Earth, atmospheric and planetary sciences from MIT.

misty-richmondMisty Richmond, an assistant professor in the College of Nursing and Health at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio, has been given the additional responsibility as director of the psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner concentration.

Dr. Richmond is a graduate of the Mount Saint Joseph University in Cincinnati, Ohio. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. from the University of Cincinnati.

michelle_deckerMichelle Decker is a new assistant professor of English at Scripps College in Claremont, California. Her research focuses on global Anglophone literatures. She is currently at work on a book entitled African Genres: Literature, Geography, and Poetics in the Long East Coast.

Dr. Decker holds a bachelor’s degree, a master’s degree, and a Ph.D. in comparative literature, all from Pennsylvania State University.

harrisonMarietta L. Harrison, a professor of medicinal chemistry and molecular pharmacology at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, was named the inaugural deputy director of the university’s Discovery Park.

Professor Harrison is a graduate of the University of New Hampshire. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Wyoming.

CarpuatMarine Carpuat is a new assistant professor of computer science at the University of Maryland. She was a research scientist at the National Research Council of Canada.

Dr. Carpuat holds a Ph.D. in computer science from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. She conducted postdoctoral research at the Center for Computational Learning Systems at Columbia University in New York City.

Carla_EssenbergCarla Ennenberg was appointed an assistant professor of biology at Bates College in Maine. She was a postdoctoral research associate at the Center for Insect Science of the University of Arizona.

Dr. Ennenberg is a graduate of St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota, where she majored in philosophy and music. She holds a Ph.D. in evolution, ecology, and organismal biology from the University of California, Riverside.

carolyn-barnes250Carolyn Barnes is a new assistant professor at the Sanford School of Public Policy at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. She was conducting research at the School of Social Service Administration at the University of Chicago.

Dr. Barnes is a graduate of Virginia Tech. She holds a master’s degree in political science and a Ph.D. in public policy and political science from the University of Michigan.

BrandizziFederica Brandizzi was named a MSU Foundation Professor at Michigan State University. She is a professor of plant biology and has served on the Michigan State faculty since 2006.

Before coming to Michigan State, Dr. Brandizzi was an associate professor and Canada Research Chair in the biology department of the University of Saskatchewan in Canada.

SheldonTamara Sheldon is a new assistant professor of economics at the University of South Carolina. She recently completed her Ph.D. in economics at the University of California, San Diego.

Dr. Sheldon, who holds a bachelor’s degree in environmental engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, worked on Wall Street before deciding on a career in academia.
