Six Women in New Faculty Roles at Leading Universities

McCurry_1Stephanie McCurry was appointed professor of history at Columbia University. For the past 13 years, Dr. McCurry has served on the faculty at the University of Pennsylvania. She is the author of Masters of Small Worlds: Yeoman Households, Gender Relations and the Political Culture of the Antebellum South Carolina Low Country (Oxford University Press, 1995) and Confederate Reckoning: Power and Politics in the Civil War South (Harvard University Press, 2010).

Professor McCurry is a graduate of the University of Western Ontario. She holds a master’s degree from the University of Rochester in New York and a Ph.D. from Binghamton University of the State University of New York System.

ChaxelAnne-Sophie Chaxel is a new assistant professor of marketing in the Pamplin College of Business at Virginia Tech. Since 2012, Dr. Chaxel has taught at McGill University in Montreal.

Dr. Chaxel earned two master’s degrees at universities in France and holds a Ph.D. in marketing from Cornell University.

cowinsElicia Cowins is a new assistant professor of accounting at the Ernest Williams School of Commerce, Economics and Politics at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia. She was a visiting professor at Georgia State University in Atlanta.

Dr. Cowins is a graduate of Florida A&M University in Tallahassee. She hold a master’s degree in accounting from Florida State University and a Ph.D. from the Kenan-Flagler Business School at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

choffmann-200Claudia Hoffman was appointed an assistant professor of film at Clarkson University in Potsdam, New York. Previously, she was a visiting assistant professor in the department of English at the University of Toronto at Scarborough and a visiting assistant professor in the School of Theater, Film, and Television at the University of California, Los Angeles.

Dr. Hoffman is a graduate of the University of Hamburg in Germany. She earned a master’s degree at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, and a Ph.D. in English from the University of Florida.

safford0Monika Safford was named chief of the Division of General Internal Medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York. Her appointment is effective on January 1. Dr. Safford is a professor of medicine and assistant dean for continuing medical education at the University of Alabama Birmingham. She has served on the faculty there since 2003.

Dr. Safford is a graduate of Dartmouth College, where she double majored in biology and German. She is a 1986 graduate of Weill Cornell Medical College.

dianeflaherty2-1Diane Flaherty, a professor of economics at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, has been given the additional responsibility as associate dean for curriculum in the Commonwealth Honors College at the university.

Professor Flaherty has been on the faculty at the University of Massachusetts since 1978. She is a graduate of Barnard College in New York City and holds a Ph.D. in economics from New York University.
