Elizabeth Fleming Announces Her Plan to Retire as President of Converse College

flemingElizabeth A. Fleming, the ninth president of Converse College in Spartanburg, South Carolina, has announced that she will step down at the end of the current academic year. Dr. Fleming will have led the college for 11 years.

Converse College was founded in 1889. It enrolls more than 800 women in undergraduate programs and more than 500 students in its co-educational graduate programs.

Before becoming president of Converse College in 2005, Dr. Fleming was executive director of the Gibbes Museum of Art in Charleston, South Carolina. She had taught at Yale University and the Parsons School of Design in New York.

Dr. Fleming is a magna cum laude graduate of Harvard University, where she majored in fine arts. She holds a master’s degree in the history of design from the Royal College of Art in London, and earned a Ph.D. in the history of art from Yale University.
