Bates College, the highly rated liberal arts educational institution in Lewiston, Maine, has announced the promotion of seven faculty members. Matthew Auer, vice president for academic affairs and dean of the faculty at Bates College, stated that “all seven faculty members are outstanding teachers and scholars. They exemplify what it means to be fully invested members of our liberal arts community and leaders in the academy.” Four of the seven promotions went to women.
Lauren Ashwell was promoted to associate professor of philosophy. She was also granted tenure. Dr. Ashwell joined the faculty at Bates College in 2009. Dr. Ashwell hold bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Auckland in New Zealand. She earned a Ph.D. in philosophy at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Carol Dilley is a new full professor of dance. She joined the Bates faculty in 2003. She has worked as an international choreographer, performer, and educator for over 25 years. Professor Dilley earned a master of fine arts degree from the University of Washington and a graduate certificate in arts management from the University of Technology in Sydney Australia.
Adriana Salerno was named an associate professor of mathematics and granted tenure. A member of the Bates College faculty since 2009. Dr. Salerno is originally from Caracas, Venezuela, where she received her undergraduate degree in mathematics from the Universidad Simon Bolivar. She earned a Ph.D. in mathematics at the University of Texas at Austin.
Paula Schlax was promoted to full professor of chemistry. Her research is focused on the role of RNA structure in controlling gene expression in diverse prokaryotes. She joined the faculty at the college in 1998. Professor Schlax is a graduate of Clarkson University in Potsdam, New York. She earned a Ph.D. at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
