Susan Martin to Take Over the Leadership of San Jose State University

Susan-Martin-vrmpqwOn July 7, Susan Martin stepped down as president of Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti. In March, Dr. Martin announced she would leave the presidency after seven years, take a one-year sabbatical, and then return to Eastern Michigan University as a tenured professor in the department of accounting and finance in the College of Business.

But just 11 days after Dr. Martin left her post as president of Eastern Michigan University, the Office of the Chancellor of the California State University System announced that Dr. Martin would serve as the interim president of San Jose State University. She is scheduled to take office on August 18 when current San Jose State University President Mohammad Qayoumi leaves to become a chief adviser to the president of Afghanistan.

Dr. Martin is expected to serve as interim president until June 30, 2016. Eastern Michigan University will delay her one-year sabbatical until that time.

Dr. Martin was named the 22nd president and the first woman president of Eastern Michigan University in 2008. Before taking the job as president of Eastern Michigan University, Dr. Martin was provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at the University of Michigan-Dearborn. Earlier, she served for 18 years on the faculty of Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Michigan.

Dr. Martin is a graduate of Central Michigan University. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in accounting from Michigan State University.
