Marcia K. McNutt has been selected as the next president of the National Academy of Sciences. She will become president on July 1, 2016. Dr. McNutt currently serves as editor-in-chief of the Science family of journals.
Dr. McNutt is a geophysicist. A graduate of Colorado College, she earned a Ph.D. in earth sciences at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California, San Diego.
Professor McNutt began her academic career at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and was promoted through the ranks to become the Griswold Professor of Geophysics. Later she was president and CEO of the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute and a professor at Stanford University. From 2009 to 2013, Dr. McNutt was director of the U.S. Geological Survey. She is a past president of the American Geophysical Union.
