The Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute at the University of Missouri has established an oral history project chronicling the battle for gender equality in journalism. A website – Herstory – has been set up with audio and videotaped interviews with 34 women journalists. Most of these women began their careers in the 1960s and 1970s.
The project is under the direction of Yong Volz, an associate professor at the University of Missouri School of Journalism. Born in Beijing and raised in Shanghai, Dr. Volz received bachelor’s and master’s degrees in journalism from People’s University of China. She also received a master’s degree from the Chinese University of Hong Kong and a doctoral degree in mass communication with a minor in history from the University of Minnesota.
