
The prize is awarded to a book or other scholarship that has made a significant contribution to the history of public health and social medicine. Professor Humphreys was honored for her book Marrow of Tragedy: The Health Crisis of the American Civil War (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2013).
Professor Humphreys is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame and the Harvard Medical School. She earned a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in the history of science from Harvard University.
