Women Students and Faculty Threaten to Sue the Maricopa Community College District

maricopaA group of women, including current and former employees and current and former students, in the Maricopa Community College District, are threatening to sue the educational institution for racial and sexual discrimination. Based in Tempe, Arizona, and serving the Phoenix metropolitan area, the Maricopa Community College District is the largest in the United States, serving more than a quarter of a million students each year.

The group of women presented a list of allegations and estimated the damages they suffered at $94 million. Among the allegations are inappropriate physical contact by faculty members, sexual harassment, being unfairly passed over for promotions, and retaliation against women who complained about sexual harassment.

The group’s attorney is seeking a settlement with the district and has threatened to file a lawsuit if a settlement is not reached.
