Women Named to Dean Posts at Seven Universities

ToyodaMaria Toyoda was appointed dean of the College of Arts & Sciences at Suffolk University in Boston, Massachusetts, effective July 1. Dr. Toyoda is a professor of political science and associate dean for interdisciplanary studies and global initiatives in the College of Arts & Sciences at Villanova University in Pennsylvania. She is the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Japanese Political Economy.

Professor Toyoda is a graduate of Stanford University. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in government from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.

Nancmcintyrey McIntyre was named interim dean of the College of Business and Economics at West Virginia University. Dr. McIntyre has been serving as senior associate dean for research and outreach and an associate professor of management in the College of Business and Economics.

Dr. McIntyre is a graduate of Illinois State University. She holds a master’s degree in marketing from the University of Illinois and a Ph.D. in business administration from the University of Rhode Island.

gittensCarol Ann Gittens was appointed interim dean of the School of Education and Counseling Psychology at Santa Clara University in California. She currently serves as associate professor of liberal studies and associate dean in the College of Arts and Sciences at the university.

Dr. Gitttens joined the faculty at Santa Clara University in 1996. She is a graduate of the University of California, Davis and holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in psychology from the University of California, Riverside.

newhouseRobin P. Newhouse was named the next dean of the Indiana University School of Nursing. She currently serves as a professor and chair of the department of organizational systems and adult health at the University of Maryland. She will begin her new job on July 1.

Dr. Newhouse is a graduate of Anne Arundel Community College and the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. She holds two master’s degree and a Ph.D. in nursing from the University of Maryland.

Nerenberg_Photo__for_AG_website-210Ellen Nerenberg was appointed Dean of Arts and Humanities at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut. She is the Hollis Professor of Romance Languages and Literatures and professor of Italian at Wesleyan.

A member of the Wesleyan faculty since 1994, Professor Nerenberg is the author of Murder Made in Italy: Homicide, Media, and Contemporary Italian Culture (Indiana University Press, 2012). Professor Nerenberg is a graduate of Stanford University and holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago.

Suzanne PhotoSuzanne Barbour was appointed dean of the Graduate School at the University of Georgia, effective July 13. She has been serving as director of the Division of Molecular and Cellular Biosciences at the National Science Foundation and as a professor of biochemistry and molecular biology at the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine in Richmond. She joined the faculty at Virginia Commonwealth in 1993.

Dr. Barbour is a graduate of Rutgers University in New Jersey, where she majored in chemistry. She holds a Ph.D. in molecular biology and genetics from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.

GloriaCulverGloria Culver is the new dean of the School of Arts and Sciences at the University of Rochester. She has been serving in the post on an interim basis since July. Previously, she was chair of the department of biology at the university. Earlier in her career, she served on the faculty at Iowa State University.

Dr. Culver is a graduate of Ithaca College in New York. She holds a Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of Rochester.
