Boston University in Massachusetts has announced the promotion of 25 faculty members to the rank of full professor. Five of the promotions were awarded to women.
Kalpana Gupta was appointed a full professor of medicine. She is an expert on antibiotic resistance and its role in hospital-acquired infections. Dr. Gupta is the former chair of the International Clinical Practice Guideline for Treatment of Urinary Tract Infections in Women. Professor Gupta earned her medical degree at Stony Brook University of the State University of New York System and holds a master of public health degree from the University of Washington.
Catherine Klapperich was named full professor of biomedical engineering. She is the director of the Center for Future Technologies in Cancer Care and the Laboratory for Diagnostics and Global Healthcare Technologies. Dr. Klapperich also was recently appointed associate dean for research and technology development for the university’s College of Engineering. Professor Klapperich holds a master’s degree from Harvard University and a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from the University of California, Berkeley.
Elise Morgan was appointed professor of mechanical engineering. Her research focuses on how mechanical signals contribute to the development, adaptation, degeneration, and regeneration of bone and cartilage. Professor Morgan joined the faculty at Boston University in 2003. She is a graduate of Stanford University and holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from the University of California, Berkeley.
Karen Quillen was promoted to professor of pathology and laboratory medicine. She is the director of the blood bank and the blood stem cell processing laboratory at the Boston Medical Center. Her research is focused on safety issues for patients who often need blood transfusions, such as patients with sickle cell disease. Dr. Quillen is a graduate of Harvard University and the medical school of Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. She earned a master of public health degree at Boston University.
Irene Zaderenko was named professor of romance studies. Her research is focused on the prose and medieval epic poetry of Spain. Professor Zaderenko has just completed a new book about the complex relation between Rodrigo DÃÂaz de Vivar and the Monastery of Cardeña. Dr. Zaderenko is a graduate of the University of Buenos Aires in Argentina. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. from the City University of New York.
