Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania recently announced the promotion of five faculty members to full professor and six faculty members were promoted from assistant professor to associate professor. Seven of the 11 promotions went to women.
Farha Ghannam was promoted to full professor of anthropology. She is the author of Live and Die Like a Man: Gender Dynamics in Urban Egypt (Stanford University Press, 2013). Professor Ghannam is a graduate of Yarmouk University in Jordan, where she majored in journalism and mass communication. She also earned a master’s degree in social anthropology at Yarmouk University and a Ph.D. in social anthropology at the University of Texas at Austin.
Cheryl Grood was named full professor of mathematics. Professor Grood says that she has wanted to teach mathematics since she was 10 years old. She joined the faculty at Swarthmore in 1998. Her current research focuses on graph theory and linear algebra. Professor Grood is a graduate of the University of Michigan. She earned a Ph.D. in mathematics at the University of Wisconsin.
Ellen Ross is a new professor of religion who specializes in Christian traditions and Quaker studies. She is the author of The Grief of God: Images of the Suffering Jesus in Late Medieval England (Oxford University Press, 1997). Professor Ross is a graduate of Princeton University. She earned a master’s degree and a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago.
